A/V COMPANY SAND CREATES AFTERMOVIES FOR BRAZILIAN SUPERSTAR THIAGUINHO WITH BLACKMAGIC DESIGN

AV production company Sand uses Blackmagic Design cameras and switchers with Brazil’s biggest concerts, festivals and events.

Fremont, CA, USA - Wednesday, August 21, 2024 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Brazilian audiovisual production company Sand is using a capture to post production workflow from Blackmagic Design for live streaming and aftermovies for some of Brazil’s biggest concerts, festivals and events. This includes pagode singer, composer and presenter Thiaguinho’s (Thiago André Barbosa) recent Tardezinha tour, which spanned 30 stops across Brazil to an average audience of 20,000 attendees per show.

A common deliverable for large live productions in Brazil, especially for concerts and music festivals, an aftermovie is a recap of an event uploaded to YouTube or social media that highlights the main portions and serves as a lasting reminder. As Sand Founder and CEO Égon Marzullo noted, “Sand has more than 10 years of experience in aftermovies and has produced over 3,000 of them, making them one of the biggest deliveries in our production workflow.”

“When it comes to a successful aftermovie, you need the perfect combination of camera movement, texture and color to create a cinematic universe for the viewer since you are immortalizing a live performance,” he added. “Thanks to Blackmagic Design’s Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, 6K and 6K Pro, all shooting in Blackmagic RAW, we’re able to marry high quality cinematic images with ultra portability and then perfect the footage in post using DaVinci Resolve Studio for color grading.”

During the Tardezinha tour, Sand was responsible for creating an aftermovie for each of the 30 shows. “We firmly believe that our commitment to utilizing Blackmagic cameras underscores a pivotal aspect of our services: the ability to deliver cinematic image quality and unparalleled sharpness,” said Marzullo. “Since the environment is always unpredictable, and you need to deal with all types of problems while trying to capture moments that can’t be repeated, and most of the time that you can’t control, reliability is key. This is why our broadcast team used a full Blackmagic Design workflow.”

Four Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro digital film cameras capturing the show fed into an ATEM Television Studio HD live production switcher, with a SmartView HD monitor showing the multiview. Recording was done by a HyperDeck Studio HD Mini broadcast deck and a Blackmagic Video Assist 7” 12G HDR monitor/recorder, which was also used for monitoring camera exposure.

“Our program signal was also shared with the personnel responsible for real time reproduction on the venue’s screens, with conversions handled by Blackmagic’s Mini Converter UpDownCross HD. In some locations, it was necessary to set up a chroma key structure for sign language interpretation, and we employed Blackmagic’s Mini Converters Optical Fiber 12G due to the long distance from the house mix and the need for program return to the interpreters,” added Rodrigo Oliveira, broadcast specialist at Sand.

“The exceptional quality of the footage captured by Blackmagic cameras, coupled with the ease of interaction with the equipment and its adaptability to various situations and mounts, solidifies our ongoing preference for Blackmagic in our productions,” said Marzullo. “Additionally, we trust Blackmagic as the most reliable for projects of this magnitude. In a show of this scale, we cannot afford to take risks regarding signal loss or equipment malfunctions during performances. With Blackmagic equipment, we have greater confidence that we will achieve the best results with enhanced security, ensuring the utmost satisfaction of our clients. This commitment sets us apart from other creators operating within the same market.”

“Our decision to utilize Blackmagic equipment predates the Tardezinha tour significantly,” Marzullo concluded. “Since 2020, we have exclusively employed Blackmagic cameras for all our projects, spanning shows, parties, and festivals. We also have an educational front called Academy by Sand where I’ve personally taught more than 1,000 students who are trying to create their own film production companies. With Blackmagic gear, we certainly push the aftermovie industry to the next level and inspire a new generation of filmmakers to reach the same level of quality in their films.”
